Did you eat beanie weenies as a kid? I can remember eating them now and then. My husband though I made up the name when I told him we were having beanie weenies for dinner. Ha ha! He sure didn’t eat them growing up.
Commercially canned beanie weenies are likely full of bad ingredients. Here is a list of ingredients for a popular brand.
- Ingredients: Prepared White Beans (Water, Dried White Beans), Water, Wieners (Mechanically Separated Chicken, Water, Salt, Beef, Flavorings and Spice, Sugar, Sodium Phosphate, Sodium Erythorbate, Sodium Nitrite), Tomato Paste, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Salt, Onion Powder, Natural and Artificial Flavors.
Lots of ingredient in that that I don’t want to eat, and there is no telling what the “Natural and Artificial Flavors” include!
Here is my recipe for Beanie Weenies.
Homemade Beanie Weenies
Ingredients
PreparationPlace bean in a large bowl covering with at least one inch of water. Cover with a towel and let soak about 12 hours or over night. Drain beans and rinse. Place in a colander lined with a tea towel or flour sack. Wrap towel around beans and rinse with water wetting towel around beans. Watch for beans to sprout. Rinse if necessary to keep beans moist. Saute onion in butter in a large soup pot and saute until they start to brown. Place sprouted beans in a pot with the onion. Add 12 ounces of tomato sauce and chicken broth. Cook until the beans are tender. Add remain ingredients and cook on low until flavors blend. (you can also add 1/4 cup of maple syrup if you like you beans on the sweeter side) Slice hot dogs and saute in a skillet. Stir cooked hot dogs into the beans and serve.
